What are soft enamel pins?
Soft enamel pins, despite the name, are not actually soft. They are typically crafted from sturdy metals such as iron or zinc alloy. The term "soft" instead refers to the technique and method used to create the enamel colors on these pins. The process of making soft enamel pins involves filling the recessed areas of the pin with enamel, and then baking it to harden the enamel. This results in a slight raised surface on the enamel, giving it a more textured feel than hard enamel pins which have a smooth surface. This added texture adds depth and dimension to the design, making it even more eye-catching and appealing. In addition to the textured feel, soft enamel pins also feature more vivid colors than hard enamel pins. This is due to the thicker layer of enamel used in the manufacturing process and the baking process which causes the colors to become more vibrant. The striking visual appeal of soft enamel pins makes them ideal for promotional and branding purposes, and they are popular with sports clubs, associations, small and large companies, and as souvenirs. Soft enamel pins are more widely produced and used compared to hard enamel pins, more than 70% to 80% of lapel pins made are of soft enamel pins.

Materials of lapel pins
The most common materials for making lapel pins are copper, iron, stainless steel, zinc alloy, aluminum and PVC.
- Copper: Copper is a somewhat soft material and is suitable for the manufacture of lapel pins(eg for hard enamel pins, 3D medals) with clear and fine lines.
- Iron and stainless steel are, compared to copper, hard material and more cost effective. Iron is most commonly used for soft enamel pins and stainless steel for full-color metal printed pins.
- Zinc alloy is used for pins made by an injection molding process. They are most commonly used for double-sided medals, coins and lapel pins with sharp shapes. It is cost effective with high quanitity and it gives a better 3D effect.
- Aluminum is most commonly used for the production of printed pins.
